BRINGING HONOR TO VICTIMS		VICTIMS NEED TO KNOW
More than 30 years ago, pioneering victim advocates fought for something previously inconceivable-the provision of basic rights within the criminal justice system for victims of crime. Today, every state and the federal government provides for at least some level of participation by victims in the criminal justice system, helping to make individual communities safer and making our justice system stronger.		The third need is to know what comes next? Victims often have concerns about their role in the investigation of the crime and in the legal proceedings. They may also be concerned about issues such as media attention or payment for health care or property damage. The advocates can relieve some of the anxiety by preparing the victims to know what to expect in the aftermath of crime.
VICTIMS THREE MAJOR NEEDS People often fell helpless, vulnerable and frightened by the trama of their victimization. The crime victim/witness advocate fills in the gaps in the victims needs. The first need is to feel safe. The advocate is called by the first response deputy and goes on scene. Our goal is to make you feel as safe and comfortable as possible. We contact friends and or family or even transport to the shelter if needed. The second need is to express your emotions. No matter how serious the crime it helps to talk. The advocates office is confidential and crisis counseling is free of charge. We are there for you. DON'T LET YOUR EMOTIONS ENGULF YOU		The crime victim advocate will accompany the victim to court and help in securing injunctions. The advocate refers to other agencies and finds the best possible services that are available to the victim. Most people are unaware that there is a victims Compensation Program for victims of crime. The Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office victim advocates will assist in filing the claim and mailing them off. Our job is to serve and assist the community.
